At Chesapeake Cardiac Care, we believe in providing our patients with comprehensive testing, diagnosis, and, most importantly, follow-up treatment. If you are diagnosed with a sleep disorder, we will create a customized treatment plan to manage your sleep and ensure that you are getting a good night’s rest every night.

What is sleep management?

Sleep management is what happens after you complete a sleep study; it involves creating a sustainable plan to manage and treat your sleep disorder.

What types of treatment are there?

There are different types of treatment available for sleep disorders. Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy is a common treatment. PAP therapy help keep your airways open through the night so that your airway does not collapse. This ensures that you do not stop breathing and wake up during the night. It also allows you to maintain the oxygen levels in your blood. With PAP therapy, you will get a mask to wear during the night. To keep your throat open through the night, the mask must fit correctly so that a seal is created that doesn’t allow leaks and maintains the correct level of air pressure. Each person requires a certain level of air pressure. The level is typically decided upon during a Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) test, which is performed during an in-lab sleep study.

Other forms of treatment may include lifestyle changes. If you are overweight, weight loss can be an effective treatment. Quitting smoking and not drinking alcohol typically help as well. You may need to wear oral appliances, which fit over the teeth and are worn throughout the night. Some people may have surgery to reduce the tissue in their throats or to assist them in losing weight.
